The charitable objective of the Palmerston Forts Society (PFS) is to advance public education about the history of Fort Nelson and other Victorian fortifications, particularly by supporting and assisting improvements to these sites for public benefit.
To further this objective, PFS offers grants of up to £1,000 each for projects that preserve, conserve, protect or record Victorian forts in the public interest.
Grants are intended for societies, trusts and other organisations that support or operate Victorian forts for public benefit.
Projects should produce tangible outcomes, such as restoration, education, publication or interpretation. Priority will be given to projects whose outcomes can clearly be sustained. Although rules and conditions apply, PFS may consider strong projects that do not fully meet them or that require slightly more than the usual funding limit. If in any doubt, please contact us to discuss your proposal.
Projects whose principal focus is research are covered by a separate scheme available only to PFS members. Details are available in the members’ area of this website.
Applications will be considered on their merits, and grants will be awarded on a one-off basis. All awards are made at the sole discretion of PFS, which is not required to give reasons for its decisions. A sub-committee will assess the projects and submit its recommendations for approval by the PFS committee.
A group or society may submit any number of applications, but no more than one grant will be awarded to that organisation in any calendar year.

PFS Research Grants
The objects of the Palmerston Fort Society include the advancement of the education of the public in the history of Victorian Fortifications, supporting and co-ordinating research, and publishing the useful results.
In furtherance of our objects, we are making available a number of small research grants, up to £250 in value, with the intent of supporting Palmerston Fort Society members in their research by covering some of the costs associated with conducting a predefined project.
